Miniature Burnt House

The idea was to just see what appropriated desolation looks like because I actually built the full house properly then strategically burnt sections of it (Yes, I am a true John Orr in the making).  It was a pretty fun build, around 2016, and the best part is that it happens to be under 3.5 cm.

In general, I really enjoy creating dystopian environments with a sense of realism and age. This piece may not represent that thought entirely, but that is the mindset I built it with. The debris and vegetation gives it a realistic feel and that always helps.

Overall, this house does look great and real(ish) considering it was made completely out of paper and painted with watercolours. there are not that many details that warrant explanations, seeing as this house is very simplistic yet fun to see.

Demon Blade

I can guess most people don't really want me to explain this one and they are right now thinking " We get it. Its a blade that kills demons, you are sooooooo original." To that I would say, "Okay, I get your point you don't have to seem that sarcastic about. You know that words hurt, right?" This is actually a weapon from the TV show 'Supernatural'. I had made it as a present for friend of mine. Yes, I have one of those. It was a fun project because:

1. I get to make a blade that kills demons.

2. Does one really need more reasons then the statement,"I get to make a blade that kills demons." That should be the answer to all questions.

photos-12.jpg

I made this in early 2016. The whole procedure took me about 7 and a half hours (yes, I have a lot of spare time). The actual "blade" portion of it is made of mount board that I sharpened. The handle is made of stained wood. It is painted with acrylic, the hardest part of which was the blood. It is pretty tricky to get the colour right. I don't have any jokes for this section. I thought I would be pushing it too far with jokes about blood. That would be downright creepy.

I don't have that much knowledge about the TV show so I can't really give you context to the weapons actual backstory, so just enjoy making one up. I am sure a demon killing blade is not to hard to find purposes for.

Nail Horse Knight

This is a, of course, knight of the ice cream stick Empire, riding the Rusted nail horse of Dooooooom! (just to make it sound cool). Yes , I AM a giant child.

photos-24.jpg

This was the first model I made using a glue gun, a tool I am still fascinated by because it is the only functional gun I have used. But more importantly, it helps the building process be faster than usual. Though more on this model, this whole procedure was about 3 hours, and was a completely on-the-spot build. In fairness there is not much to say about this knight, aside from the fact that I have lost his nail sword. Not really a ground breaking creation as you can probably see, but it did its part in helping me learn and progress, if nothing else.

photos-25.jpg

I feel kind of bad for it due to its complete lack of backstory as well as its faceless, pointless existence. The only other kind that is a little sad is that you as a reader have consciously chosen to read this far. Although, the good aspect to that must be that I must be doing something right, i guess, so hurrah for you wasted time and my minor sense of satisfaction.

Miniature Weapons Collection- Set 1

There is no specific reason these weapons are part of a collection. These just happen to be made as part of the same batch, but the title,” Some Tiny weapons that I have made around the same time” is not really that ideal, Not to praise the title I currently have… which is as generic as Akshay Kumar doing a “Romantic” movie. If you are not aware of who that is, you live in a better world than me, congratulations.

This set was made in the year 2014, it wasn’t supposed to be some ground breaking artwork but the original idea was that ,“Its fun to make swords!”, with the added amazingness (it is in the dictionary) of the idea, “What if they were tiny?”

The order in which you see them is the order of there creation. They all are formed of slightly aged balsa wood. They have been painted with acrylic paint and all the weathering effects are done with a basic dry brushing method, mainly because a clean sword just looks wrong to me. Any weapon needs to look like it has seen some hard times. These are fairly detailed for their size which for all of them is about 8 cm.

This is a basic crudely made Elizabethan broadsword, with a sheath.

I know its called a katana, but this is an extremely crude model of it and I fear I will offend Japanese craftsmanship by calling it that.

This blade should be familiar to those who  have seen the Lord of the Rings Movies (not The Hobbit). It is the first movie prop reproduction I have made. I have no jokes...you may breathe a sigh of relief.

This one is fairly self-explanatory. This is a two handed weapon forged in the fires of Mount Doom. Why you may ask? Because I love Lord of the Rings! End of story!

Origami Collection-Set I

Origami Collection-Set I

This is a collection of some of the origami models I have made. In fairness its actually kind of underwhelming. There is not that much to the story. I have been interested in origami since I was 8, granted 9 years may not seem like much but it is always amazing to see what one can do with a single square paper. These are not in chronological order, and roughly start off from the year 2012.

Dragon Mk-1

So…yup…this is a dragon sculpture, a mixed media art project utilizing clay, aluminium, and canvas and was created in a time span of ….Oh who am I kidding! Its my first dragon model and I am so excited and happy and joyful, oh how great is life!!

photos-8.jpg
The original concept image

The original concept image

To make sure I don’t end up too lost in self-appreciation, I will try my best to be objective from this point onward…..so here we go. First, for the minute number of people who are currently thinking,” Well, actually this creature is a wyvern. A wyvern can be identified by its signature forelimb aviation structure”, to that I say ”Yes, I agree, it isn’t that easy to make friends with non-Lord of the Rings fans”.

The initial clay body-base

The initial clay body-base

The conception of this creature began as a school project for my art class. When we were told we had a free reign over our choice of project I immediately thought “Sculpture!” and that led me to think ”Aren’t dragons cool…?” and here we are.

The mock armour plating to test the fitting

The mock armour plating to test the fitting

The base structure of this dragon is a wire armature encased in clay. The sculpting was time consuming as I had never done a natural body structure before and being an Indian summer, certain parts would dry up and crack faster then I could work on them, so you can probably imagine how frustrating that would have been. The fact that during this stage it had the honour of having the likeness of an obese chicken did not make it easier to love.

A fascinating thing about this step was the fact that I had to stuff the chest with newspaper, to make sure the body was not too heavy, which always makes me think about the fact that technically if I were to use a strategically placed lighter for long enough, the heat might reach the paper and it would catch fire! Which would mean I would have a SMOKING DRAGON!!! That would be awesome. Though the alternative would be that it would heat up, weaken the joints and the whole thing collapses into a miniature mess, so that has been the thought that has kept me at bay till date.(or-Hence no fire.)

Applying the armour

Applying the armour

Another important feature about this model is the metal plating, a.k.a 6-7 cans of sprite and coke that were consumed for “work” purposes. The plating was a bit of a challenge because it’s the first time I had a pre-planned strategy in place involving definite stages. The plating process went through a rough paper draft, followed by thicker density paper after which the final plating was done in aluminium. Now, I agree there are some inconsistencies if you were to look at the armour in a few spots, but…….…I have no reasoning…its true, I was lazy, but just a little bit so I would like you to ask yourself,”Does it really matter? Come to thing of it, does anything? What is the point of it all?”, by the end of which hopefully you would have forgotten about the original problem,Which I just reminded you of, which I had to do to make the joke effective in writing, so it was a catch-22 from the start.

photos-9.jpg

The last part of this project were the wings, and in all honesty, the only reason I chose to stitch canvas was because it seemed worth a try at that time. It was still fun to do though, so no regrets there.

Without a doubt, the most fun component was the tail blade. It started as a minor detail but slowly became my favourite part of the model and kind of felt like my signature addition to the concept of an armoured dragon and I am pretty happy with my result.

Miniature Abandoned Cabin

This is, as far as I can recall, the first miniature model I had actually finished, so congratulations to ME!

photos-16.jpg

The center piece is a house made of paper and painted with watercolour, the fence is fine mesh, and the base plate is a piece of slate I “borrowed” from my school. I am particularly satisfied with this one because it is one of the few pieces that has a high level of detailing like the grass, the barrel out back, the individually placed roof tiles (yes, you read correctly, and yes it was excruciatingly tedious), and things like that that really make this piece stand out.

photos-15.jpg

Now from a narrative perspective (because me describing what you are already looking at is going to get boring eventually) I created this model with a backstory. With most of my creations, the actual creative process is completely organic. And sometimes they come with a story.

This particular one had a really brief tale of woe. It might not seem like much but it was enough to fuel my enthusiasm. The story was about two people who ended up near a quarantined forest. They were on the run and had nothing to look back to. These two, after weeks, were lost and hopeless until….one of them spots a house in the distance. Its old, rusty, and smells of rotting wood, but something about it makes it enticing enough to stay. Things went along fine for a few days, a sense of calm fell on the travelers. Then one day, one of them killed the other….no warning, no reasoning (as best I can identify), just cold blooded murder.

“Yes”, people have told me I am weird and “No”, I do not have psychopathic tendencies (or do I?).

I understand it seems odd that THIS story leads me to THIS house, I can’t really explain it either, but it just helps me visualize what I want the thematic feel to be and sometimes all you need is that slight inclination to start and that pushes me till I finish.
